A new 40,000-square-foot hangar and a customs facility are coming to McKinney National Airport, according to a news release.

The project is expected to break ground May 10, McKinney National Airport Director Ken Carley said.

The details

Two buildings will be constructed as part of the project, including Corporate Hangar 10. The hangar will be adjacent to Corporate Hangar 9 and will increase the overall hangar capacity at the airport, the release stated.

The U.S. Customs facility planned for the site will span 3,200 square feet. The facility will allow for expedited processing for passengers on international flights as well as the implementation of additional security measures, according to the release.

The project will be completed by general contracting and construction management firm Swinerton in conjunction with developer Griffin Swinerton, the release stated.

How we got here

McKinney City Council members approved the issuance of $24.5 million in certificates of obligation for the project at a November meeting.

Council members also approved a $2.3 million construction contract in March for a taxilane connector project that will allow the planned hangar development to be connected to the airport’s taxiway system.

Diving deeper

The project is being completed through a public-private partnership, the release stated.

The partnership includes the city of McKinney retaining ownership of the facilities while developer Griffin Swinerton leads development and construction.

“Swinerton and our development partner Griffin Swinerton have completed more than 13 [public-private partnership] projects nationwide, and we’re excited to bring that expertise to McKinney [National] Airport,” said Tyler Whittaker, Dallas division manager and vice president for Swinerton, in the release.

McKinney City Council members approved a resolution to authorize the partnership agreement at a Dec. 19 meeting. The resolution included a maximum price for the project of just under $23 million, according to city documents.

Quote of note

“We have prioritized expanding McKinney [National] Airport’s offerings to meet the region’s growing demands by adding a new hangar and creating a new customs facility that will serve our general aviation operations needs,” McKinney Mayor George Fuller said in the release.
