Medical City McKinney Hosts CarFit Event for Drivers Over 50 McKinney – Medical City McKinney will join trained CarFit volunteers to assess how well older drivers and their vehicles work together. Drivers over age 50 are evaluated using a 12-point checklist. Among the items checked: -Correct position of driver’s seat -Driver’s ability to easily reach pedals -Proper adjustment of mirrors The event is scheduled on Thursday, October 12, from 9 a.m. – 12 noon in the Collin College Center for Higher Learning parking. Call 972-322-7920 to schedule an appointment. “As we age, changes in our vision, flexibility, strength, range of motion and even size and height may make us less comfortable and reduce our control behind the wheel,” says Kathy Galt, RN, injury prevention coordinator at Medical City McKinney. “CarFit events like this one provide older adults with the tools to understand and apply their car’s safety features.” If needed, occupational therapists will provide personal consultation to teach drivers how to maintain and improve aspects related to their driving health. Therapists can share information that may address an individual need, including local community resources for exercise, nutrition and other programs to help keep seniors healthy, which contributes to driver’s safety and the safety of others.
