Inclusion: Simple Ways We Can All Make a Difference

Inclusion is more than just a buzzword.  It’s an intentional practice of recognizing and valuing everyone, including individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). It’s about making people feel welcomed, valued, and empowered to participate fully in all aspects of life.

While we often think about inclusion related to disability, inclusion benefits everyone and is a critical part of creating vibrant, thriving communities and workplaces.

Inclusion isn’t just a fancy word or a big idea. It’s about kindness, respect, and making sure nobody is left out at work, at school, or in our communities. That’s something we can all do.

What Is Inclusion?

Inclusion means everyone gets a chance to join in, to be heard, and to feel like they belong. It’s not only about helping people who have disabilities; it’s important for everyone. Inclusion is about removing barriers so that spaces and activities are open for everyone.

It’s about respecting and valuing diverse perspectives and experiences and building communities with a sense of belonging, where differences are celebrated.

What Inclusion Is Not

  • Just Following Rules: It’s not only about doing what’s required by law. True inclusion comes from the heart.
  • Pretending to Care: It’s not about just inviting someone but listening to and acknowledging their needs and ideas.
  • Making People Change to Fit In: We shouldn’t expect people to be just like everyone else. We should welcome them as they are.

How Can We Be More Inclusive?

We can all practice and promote inclusion and make a real difference.  It might be as simple as taking time to learn about others’ challenges and understanding their disability.  Ask questions and truly listen to help them feel more comfortable. We can be advocates for inclusion by making sure no one is left out because of a disability or challenge.

The Role of Accessibility in Inclusion

Accessibility is a foundation of inclusion. It means making places, things, and information easy for everyone to use, no matter their ability. When things are accessible, everyone gets a fair chance to take part in school, work, online, and in the community.

What does accessibility look like?
  • Taking Down Barriers: Physical, digital, and communication
  • Providing a sense of belonging and equity
  • Making sure everyone can participate in the community, business, and more to share ideas and engage in decision-making.
  • Encouraging innovation, which leads to a more user-friendly environment for everyone.

When even one individual promotes and practices inclusivity, it inspires others in school, the workplace, or the community to do the same. It’s everyone’s responsibility to encourage organizations or communities to adopt more inclusive practices to make things better for everyone.

Why Does Inclusion Matter

Inclusion is not just a policy or a program.  It requires a shift in our mindset and daily practice.

When we include others, we show kindness and respect. We help people feel safe and valued. Our communities grow stronger because everyone can share their talents and ideas. We create spaces where everyone can thrive, contribute, and feel that they belong.

You don’t have to be an expert in inclusion, disabilities, or accessibility to make a difference; just a caring heart and a willingness to listen and act can make a huge impact.
