Introducing Jeremiah McBurrows Jr.: AEYL Intern & A Rising Voice in Journalism and Community Advocacy
Jeremiah McBurrows Jr. is a recent high school graduate from Heritage High School who will be pursuing a degree in Journalism at the University of Oklahoma in the fall. Beyond this however, he is an avid voice of his community, volunteer, and writer.
McBurrows has always loved to write. Whether it be a narrative analysis or an introspective poem, the passion for putting pen to paper has been close to his heart for as long as he can remember. This love sprouted into a potential career in his junior year, where he found himself on his school yearbook team. After a year of learning and observation, McBurrows was Copy Editor and became responsible for overseeing all the writing that goes into the yearbook. McBurrows took this opportunity by the horns, as he took it upon himself to make the yearbook as inclusive as ever. Getting new faculty and groups involved, leading other young writers, and bringing a new air of inclusivity are only a few things that McBurrows did to create the best-selling Heritage yearbook in recent memory.
Giving people a voice is what McBurrows loves most about being able to write for his community. He goes out beyond high school to lift the voices of those who are not heard, working with people like Coach Charles Williams of Elevate Your Game Inc. to tell their story through writing. McBurrows has also worked with programs like The Oklahoma Institute for Diversity in Journalism (OIDJ) at the University of Oklahoma to get more real-world experience and lessons in his future career.
Outside of his journalistic career, McBurrows is a proud member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Legacy & Merit youth groups. As a member, he has been involved in many volunteer opportunities in his community and been presented with lessons on how to better carry himself as a young man entering the world of adulthood. These lessons will walk with McBurrows as he traverses through the next stage of his life, offering a great guideline of morals and servitude to those around him.
McBurrows is interning with the McKinney Chamber of Commerce through the Alliance of Youth Leadership (AEYL).
Giving his gifts to help the world is a guide that McBurrows plans to follow wholeheartedly. There’s no better joy in his life than knowing he’s helped a stranger feel a little less strange.
