Choosing the right vet for your furry, scaly, or feathered friend is such an important decision. What makes a great vet? Well, it’s a wonderful mix of things that go beyond medical training. Let’s dive into what sets an excellent vet apart from a mediocre vet. Then, I will share feedback on the favorite vets in McKinney.
What Makes an Excellent Vet
- Strong Medical Knowledge and Skills: They possess a comprehensive understanding of animal anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and various medical and surgical procedures. They stay updated on the latest advancements in veterinary medicine through continuing education.
- Diagnostic Acumen: A good vet is a skilled detective, able to gather information through history taking, physical examination, and diagnostic tests to accurately identify the underlying cause of an animal’s illness.
- Effective Communication: They can clearly and compassionately explain diagnoses, treatment options, and prognoses to pet owners, ensuring they understand the situation and can make informed decisions. They listen attentively to owners’ concerns and answer questions thoroughly.
- Empathy and Compassion: They genuinely care about the well-being of their animal patients and demonstrate empathy towards worried owners. They handle animals gently and strive to minimize their stress and discomfort.
- Problem-Solving Abilities: Veterinary medicine often presents complex and challenging cases. A good vet is resourceful and can think critically to develop effective treatment plans, even in difficult situations.
- Surgical Dexterity (if applicable): For veterinarians who perform surgery, precision, skill, and adherence to sterile techniques are crucial for successful outcomes.
- Ethical Conduct: They adhere to the highest ethical standards in their practice, prioritizing the animal’s best interests and maintaining professional integrity.
- Teamwork and Collaboration: They work effectively with veterinary technicians, assistants, and other specialists to provide comprehensive care.
- Client Relationship Management: Building trust and rapport with pet owners is essential. A good vet is approachable, respectful, and responsive to their clients’ needs.
- Commitment to Preventative Care: They emphasize the importance of vaccinations, parasite control, nutrition, and regular check-ups to maintain the long-term health of their patients.
On my quest for the best vet in McKinney, I reached out to pet parents on several McKinney Facebook groups. In addition to sharing what pet parents love about their vet, a few pet owners expressed a common frustration–the inability to obtain a prescription to be filled somewhere other than the vet clinic, without paying a fee for the prescription. The two offenders mentioned were Highlands Eldorado Animal Hospital and Animal Medical Center of McKinney. Now, here are the favorite vets in McKinney.

He (Dr. Means) is a clear straightforward person who listens carefully to me when I explain my concerns. He seems as though he has a genuine love for the animals he cares for. He is kind, not rushed, gentle. After I moved to McKinney last summer I met a client of his when I took my dog. I asked him if he had been going to Dr Means long. He told me yes and that he had recently moved and had driven over from Fort Worth just to see Dr. Means. On top of all this he has good sense of humor. I love my dog and cat and am extremely careful about doing the best I can by them.— Kit Hill
I use King Veterinary Clinic on 380 (East side). Dr Means is a no-nonsense, affordable and very compassionate vet. His building is old but it is worth overlooking, believe me. He offers shot clinics on some Saturdays too. –Mia Griggs
King Vet is one of the few privately owned vet clinics left in McKinney. This means prices are low and attention to my concerns is high. I am not “nicked and dimed to death” for services. My pup is blind and the pressure on her eyeballs was causing her pain. The recommendation was to have her eyes removed. One clinic wanted to charge me $2300. Dr. Means charged me $800 and that included a teeth cleaning! The shot clinics are also a “plus” –Erick Gary
