A McKinney junior has been named one of 109 musicians selected from across the country to take part in the annual National Youth Orchestra.
Devin Drinan, who attends McKinney Boyd High School in McKinney, will join students from 34 different states who have been recognized by Carnegie Hall as being among the best of the best, following a comprehensive and highly selective audition process.
Students will take part in a two-week training residency at Purchase College in New York and then tour across Europe. The tour begins with a performance at the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam (August 2); then the orchestra kicks off the Young Euro Classic festival in Berlin (August 5); followed by a debut at the Lucerne Festival (August 10).
Music has been a very big part of his ife all throughout high school. He said he made some of the best friendships from being involved in band.
He's currently the Brass Captain for the marching band, as well as the 1st chair trombone in the jazz and honors band at his school. He's made the All-Region band for three years running and made the TMEA All-State band last year. He said he really enjoy the competitive audition process.
Hestarted playing the trombone in 6th grade and some of his relatives were musicians so he was pretty sure that had an effect on how fast he grew to love playing.
In 8th grade, his middle school band took a field trip to the Dallas Symphony, which sparked his love for music performance and made him want to pursue it as a career.
