From Family Caregiver to Community Advocate: A Mission to Help Seniors Age in Place
By Angel Wong, Owner of TruBlue of McKinney
Nearly 20 years ago, my family experienced firsthand how one fall can change not only a person’s independence, but the life of an entire family.
My mother had suffered a stroke and worked hard to regain her strength. Over time, she was able to walk again with a cane. But after a fall at home resulted in a broken hip, everything changed. Once active and able to travel and go places on her own, she became increasingly reliant on a wheelchair.
At that time, I was living in San Francisco and returned to Hong Kong to be there for her. While looking for a job and arranging for a full-time caregiver, I also had to learn how to navigate everyday life with her changing needs. Activities that once seemed routine suddenly required much more planning. I learned to think about things I had never considered before—which subway stations had accessible elevators, how we would get from one place to another, and whether a destination could safely accommodate a wheelchair.
When my family later moved into a new home, we installed grab bars in the bathroom. Back then, that seemed like an important step. Today, with a much deeper understanding of home safety and aging in place, I realize there was so much more we could have considered.
“I wish I knew then what I know now.”
Finding a New Purpose
Years later, after a long career in the corporate world, a company reorganization gave me the opportunity to consider a new direction. I began thinking seriously about what I wanted the next chapter of my life to look like. I prayed for God’s guidance and started exploring ways I could use my experience to do something meaningful and serve others.
Around that same time, I was becoming more connected with seniors in my own community. While walking my dog around the neighborhood, I began meeting and talking with older neighbors. Those casual conversations gradually became genuine connections. I also became more involved in activities at the senior recreation center and in the local community. As I explored different possibilities, I wanted to find something that could bring together my professional experience with a more personal sense of purpose.
That search eventually led me to TruBlue Home Service Ally. Its focus on home safety, fall prevention and aging in place resonated with me because of what my own family had experienced. I also liked that the mission extended beyond seniors—helping families and homeowners create safer, more comfortable homes through every stage of life.
Bringing That Purpose to McKinney
I launched TruBlue of McKinney in September 2026, during Falls Prevention Awareness Month, making this new chapter especially meaningful. Nearly two decades after my mother’s fall changed our family’s life, that experience has taken on a new meaning for me.
As a Senior Home Safety Specialist® and Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist, I now bring both personal experience and professional training to helping families think about how their homes can support their changing needs. At TruBlue of McKinney, we provide home safety assessments, senior home modifications, professional handyman repairs and ongoing maintenance. Whether someone needs grab bars, help with a growing list of repairs, or support in making a parent’s home more comfortable, our goal is to offer reliable help and greater peace of mind. I know what it feels like to want the best for a parent while trying to understand what they need. That experience stays with me as I meet families in McKinney and surrounding communities.
At the time of my mother’s fall, I could not see where that difficult experience would lead. Looking back, I can see how God has woven it into where I am today. It has become part of the purpose behind the work I do now—helping families create safer, more comfortable homes and supporting loved ones in remaining independent.
