Twenty-five years after the attacks of September 11, 2001, the McKinney community will gather to remember the lives lost, honor the first responders who answered the call, and reflect on a day that forever changed our nation.
The 25th Anniversary 9/11 Memorial Ceremony will be held Friday, September 11, at 8:00 a.m. at McKinney Fire Headquarters, 2100 Taylor Burk Drive.
Hosted in partnership with the McKinney Fire Department, McKinney Police Department and Leadership McKinney Alumni Network, the ceremony will bring together first responders, city leaders and members of the community for a morning of remembrance.
September 11, 2001, claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people, including hundreds of firefighters, law enforcement officers and other first responders. Twenty-five years later, the anniversary provides an important opportunity not only to remember those who were lost, but also to recognize the courage and sacrifice of those who ran toward danger to help others.
The McKinney ceremony will include remarks from local leaders and representatives of public safety, along with ceremonial elements honoring those who lost their lives that day.
For Leadership McKinney alumni, the event is also an opportunity to help create a meaningful place of remembrance within the community. Volunteers, including Marine recruits and community members, will assist with preparations ahead of the ceremony, including the installation of a flag display commemorating September 11.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
Accessible parking will be limited, with golf-cart transportation available for those who need assistance. The ceremony will take place rain or shine.
As McKinney gathers on this significant anniversary, the message is simple:
