You did the work. You sent the invoice. Then life got busy, and weeks later you realize some of those invoices still haven’t been paid. It’s one of the most common, and most quietly stressful, situations small business owners face. Yet there is a simple report that most owners never look at: the accounts receivable aging report.
What It Is
An A/R aging report lists every unpaid invoice and sorts it by how long it has been outstanding: current, 1-30 days past due, 31-60 days, and so on. At a glance, it shows who owes you, how much, and for how long.
Why It Deserves More Attention
Sales aren’t cash. A busy month on your profit and loss can still leave your bank account thin if payments are slow to arrive.
Older invoices get harder to collect. The longer an invoice sits, the less likely it is to be paid promptly. Catching it at 15 days is far easier than at 90.
It shows patterns. You may notice one client who is always late, or a payment term that isn’t working. That information helps you decide how to handle the next job.
It makes your cash flow predictable. When you know what’s coming in and when, planning payroll, bills, and growth gets easier.
Three Simple Habits
- Send invoices promptly. Invoices sent right away tend to be paid sooner.
- Review your aging report monthly. Ten minutes is enough to spot what needs a friendly follow-up.
- Follow up kindly and consistently. A polite reminder is not rude. It’s part of running a healthy business.
Diligence in the small things is what turns hard work into steady, reliable income. We’d be glad to help you get there.
“The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness.” — Proverbs 21:5
